Carpenters and designers in Warangal increasingly specify BOILO where termites are a worry. The reason comes down to one property above all: density. This article explains what that means in plain terms.
What BOILO is
BOILO is a Boiling Water Proof, Fire Retardant High Density Fibreboard made by Action TESA. Wood fibres are bonded with thermosetting resin under high heat and pressure into a single uniform sheet with a density above 1000 kg/m3. Action TESA rates it termite and borer proof.
How density works against termites
Termites do not bite through hard surfaces the way a drill does. They look for soft material, gaps and damp spots, then tunnel along them. Density removes those openings:
- No layers. Plywood is made of veneers with glue lines between them. A fibreboard has no layers to separate.
- No voids. The fibres are pressed so tightly that there are no hollow pockets to nest in.
- Hard, toughened surface. A compact face is difficult for termites to start on.
- Resin through the core. Every fibre is coated in resin, so there is little plain wood to feed on.
Density compared
| Board | Typical density | Termite behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| BOILO BWP FR HDF | Above 1000 kg/m3 | Rated termite and borer proof by Action TESA |
| HDHMR | Above 850 kg/m3 | Termite and borer resistant, no extra treatment |
| MDF | About 650–800 kg/m3 | Depends on grade; not for damp areas |
| Plywood (MR / BWP) | About 550–750 kg/m3 | Depends fully on chemical treatment and brand |
| Particle board | About 600–700 kg/m3 | Weak once edges get damp |
Water has a density of 1000 kg/m3. BOILO is above that — a sheet is noticeably heavier than HDHMR or plywood of the same thickness. Read more in BOILO density explained.
Density is not the only reason
Termites need moisture. BOILO is boiling water proof, so the core does not swell or soften in damp conditions. A dry, hard, resin-bonded board gives termites neither food nor comfort. Density and water resistance work together.
Honest note: 'termite proof' describes the board. Termites can still walk across any surface to reach other wood, so treat the building as well if there is an active problem.
